We continually look for motivated and skilled individuals who are interested in supporting our customers – healthcare professionals who use our products to help patients and their communities.
We currently have the following opportunity available - please contact us for more details!
What you’ll do at Elekta
At Elekta, we don’t just build technology. We build hope for everyone dealing with cancer. In this role as a Thesis Worker, you will be a part of our Linac Solutions department.
Problem Statement
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the safety and resilience of the AM64x-based control boards in a radiated environment characteristic of LINAC applications.
Specifically, the research will focus on a multitude of perspectives:
  • Fault Analysis: Identify potential software and hardware faults that can be induced by X-ray radiation in the control boards.
  • Fault Detection: Investigate methods to reliably detect and categorize faults as they occur within the control system.
  • Fault Collection and Analysis: Develop mechanisms to log, collect, and analyze fault data to understand the frequency and impact of radiation-induced errors over time.
  • System Robustness: Assess the robustness of the control system by evaluating how well it tolerates and recovers from faults without compromising safety or functionality.
The findings will guide the development of recommendations for enhancing the control boards’ radiation tolerance and overall system reliability.
Output
The project output will include a risk analysis and recommendations. In addition, we are expecting a presentation of prototypes of Functional Safety Mechanisms. This, with a focus on development and testing of prototype safety mechanisms, designed to enhance the robustness of the control boards under radiated conditions.
These prototypes may include error detection and correction (EDAC) techniques, watchdog timers, and redundant logic circuits.
The Written Report (Master Thesis)
A detailed written report documenting the research process, findings, and outcomes. This report will include:
  • A literature review on radiation-induced faults in SoC-based control systems.
  • Experimental methodologies and testing protocols.
  • Analysis of data and insights on the effects of radiation on control boards.
  • Proposed solutions and their efficacy based on prototype testing.
  • Conclusion and future work recommendations.
This thesis aims to contribute to the broader understanding of functional safety in radiated environments, offering insights and tools for designing resilient control systems for LINACs and similar applications.
What you bring
  • Master/Bachelor student in engineering physics, applied mathematics or similar.
  • Knowledge of a programming language such as C#, Python, Java, or C++.
  • Interest in medical imaging and algorithms.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Basic understanding of software design principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Swedish and English.
  • Well-organized and a self-starter.
Why should you join Elekta?
In this role, you will work for a higher purpose; hope for everyone dealing with cancer, and for everyone regardless of where in the world, to have access to the best cancer care. You will be part of our international innovative team and given the opportunity to learn and develop. In addition to this, you will be entitled to payment in this Thesis Worker role.
