We continually look for motivated and skilled individuals who are interested in supporting our customers – healthcare professionals who use our products to help patients and their communities.
We currently have the following opportunity available - please contact us for more details!
What you’ll do at Elekta
At Elekta, we don’t just build technology. We build hope for everyone dealing with cancer. In this role as a Thesis Worker, you will be a part of our Linac Solutions department.
Introduction
This master thesis offers you the chance to develop and validate a powerful medical linear accelerator (Linac) model using the TOPAS Monte Carlo toolkit. Your model will have a direct and immediate impact on modern Linac engineering at Elekta.
Background
Linac Engineering relies on accurate simulation models to guide innovation while ensuring performance and safety. This master thesis focuses on creating a validated Monte Carlo Linac model to optimize dosimetry performance, improve shielding for radiation protection, and enhance Linac design for reliability and longevity.
Problem Statement
Developing and validating a Monte Carlo model of a modern Linac is challenging because it involves multiple complex tasks: selecting appropriate physics models, determining which Linac components to include, and establishing a reliable validation process. Additionally, extensive in-field data collection is necessary to benchmark and improve model accuracy.
Output
We are expecting the output to be prototypes of investigated methods. The above shall be documented in a report (the Master Thesis), which should include validated Monte Carlo Linac model, based on TOPAS, capable of simulating both in-field and out-of-field dosimetry, and radiation leakage around the Linac. The model is optimized for resource efficiency and uses advanced variance reduction techniques.
What you bring
  • Master/Bachelor student in medical engineering, engineering physics, nuclear energy engineering, or a related field.
  • Knowledge and interest in Monte Carlo simulations for radiation transport and in radiotherapy.
  • Experience in Monte Carlo toolkits such as Geant4 or TOPAS is valuable, but not necessary.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • An understanding of radiotherapy principles, and an interest in systems engineering.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Swedish and English.
Why should you join Elekta?
In this role, you will work for a higher purpose; hope for everyone dealing with cancer, and for everyone regardless of where in the world, to have access to the best cancer care. You will be part of our international innovative team and given the opportunity to learn and develop. In addition to this you will be entitled to payment in this Thesis Worker role.
