Join a newly created team at Auckland Council as a Veterinary Nurse in the Animal Management unit, based at the Henderson Animal Shelter. In this key role, you'll support veterinarians during surgeries and consultations while ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of animals and contribute to the success of the shelter.
This is a full-time fixed term role until April 2026. Location is in Henderson Animal Shelter.

You're a compassionate and skilled Veterinary Nurse with a passion for animal welfare. You thrive in a team environment and are eager to support veterinarians and staff while maintaining high standards of care. Your ability to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments, along with your strong organisational skills, will ensure smooth operations. You’re also proactive in educating others and maintaining clinic hygiene standards, contributing to a healthier shelter environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with surgeries, including preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care.
- Support consultations, ensuring animals are comfortable and equipment is ready.
- Administer medications, treatments, and maintain accurate medical records.
- Provide compassionate care and education for pet owners on post-operative care and general animal health.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the clinic and surgical areas.
- Assist with training staff on disease control, animal husbandry, and welfare.
- Participate in community outreach and education programs as needed.
- Support other council units, such as Parks and Community Facilities, with veterinary services.

- Flexibility to support other council units as needed.
Job Requirements
- Diploma or degree in Veterinary Nursing or equivalent.
- Current registration with the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA) or eligibility to register.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a veterinary nurse in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.
- Full New Zealand driver’s license.
