Job Description Summary:
As a visiting student will conduct research with University of Kansas Medical Center faculty, principal investigators, and labs. This is a temporary position at KUMC with the aim to perform research that would count toward the student's thesis to complete a degree program at international/home university. The Visiting Scholar - Student would conduct their activities in this position on a full-time basis.

Job Duties:

Conduct or assist lab personnel to:
  • Active participation in the successful planning and execution of experiments.
  • The individual will be responsible for assisting lab personnel in laboratory, managing animal protocols, purchasing, record management, training, and monitoring of radioactive materials.
  • The individual will play a role in maintaining the animal use and surgical records and will assist in routine lab and equipment maintenance.
  • Animal work will also include maintaining rodents on chronic treatment, carrying out exercise protocols and performing cognitive assessments.
  • Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.
  • The individual will work independently and participate in assisting the design of experiments.
  • Demonstrate competence in areas of critical thinking, technical skills, and written/communication skills in English.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in biology/biochemistry, or related field.

Work Experience:
  • Experience working in a molecular biology research laboratory.
  • Experience in cell culture.
  • Experience in mouse handling and laboratory housekeeping.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Doctoral degree or equivalent

Work Experience:
  • Experience with laboratory management.
  • Experience in microscopy, histology, imaging, and molecular biology as well as handling of laboratory animals and animal injections.

Skills:
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing, and Power Point presentations
  • Proficient in the English language

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
