The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters¿ safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to coordinate and supervise nine (9) Wildland Firefighter Tier I - III positions. The position will assist in coordination of Wildland Fires, coordinate and/or supervise a 10-20 person fire crew on Wildland Fire, planned control burns (Rx) and thinning projects across the state of New Mexico. The position is lead in operating as the crew supervisor, managing and transporting fire crew members. Provides training and development of National Wildfire Coordinator Group (NWCG) red cards. Assist in the operations of the Inmate Work Camp as needed. Ensure the application of policies, procedures and laws relating to the use of fire fighters to conduct emergency activities and natural resource projects to include the Department policies and procedures.
How does it get done?
Manage and supervise Wildland Firefighter staff of WRP. Maintenance of Wildfire Response Program equipment/vehicles/facility.
Work on projects, Division programs, WUI and Hazardous fuel reduction projects.

The WRP Assistant Supervisor position is essential to ensure the Division¿s Type 2IA crews can respond quickly to unexpected wildland fire emergencies throughout the year. The customers are the owners, residents and inhabitants of 43 million acres of non-municipal, non-federal and non-tribal land in New Mexico.

Minimum Qualification
Associate¿s degree in wildland fire science or related natural resource degree and one (1) year supervisory experience and four (4) years of experience in wildland fire or prescribed fire. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field andor direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must have NWCG qualifications for Crew Boss (CRWB) or other Single Resource and Incident Command Type 4 (ICT4) as specified in PMS 310-1 Incident Commander Type 4 | NWCG and be working toward either Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).

May work in extreme temperatures and hazardous terrain during fire assignments and providing
oversight of project work. Will work extended hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.
May be required to travel for 14 days. May use hand tools, chain saws and torches. Must pass
a yearly arduous pack test.
