Accounting Technician

Port Otago Group’s business comprises a regional container terminal, bulk port activities, cruise and property investment and development. We service South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, working with customers to streamline their supply chains. Our culture is hands-on, safety focused and encourages continuous improvement.

Our diverse portfolio means there is always something on the go and as a business we are collaborative, fast-paced and always open.

About the role:

We’ve just set our new strategy to 2035 and have realigned some roles in our Finance team to ensure it’s set up to best support the business moving forward. As a result, we are on the lookout for an Accounting Technician who will report to, and work collaboratively with, the Group Financial Controller to ensure Port Otago has robust and timely financial information.

Day to day this role will be responsible for:

  • Preparing month end journals and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Providing input into management reporting and analysis
  • Ensuring finance systems are accurately maintained and updated
  • Proactive management of fixed asset processes
  • Supporting customer invoicing and accounts payable processes and providing cover for AP and AR as required
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements

About you:

You’ll be a team player who is proactive, organised, flexible and pays high attention to detail. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and will:

  • Have at least two years’ experience in accounting, bookkeeping or financial administration
  • Be an intermediate to advanced user of excel
  • Have high levels of numerical accuracy, along with high attention to detail
  • Be a team player with great communication skill
  • Be inquisitive with a proactive approach to problem solving
  • Be tech savvy, adaptable and open to change.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll get to work with a supportive and collaborative team who are driven to achieve great results. In return for your hard work, we offer a competitive remuneration package, support for your ongoing development and we have an established culture of investing in strong performers. You will also be entitled to 7% superannuation and comprehensive health insurance cover for you, your partner, and any dependent children.

Heads up:

  • This is typically a Monday to Friday position, but as the Port operates 24/7, occasionally some flexibility is required
  • A full clean NZ Drivers licence is essential
  • A high standard of safety - not afraid to speak up
  • You must be able to pass Ministry of Justice, ACC checks and a medical which includes a drug and alcohol test as part of our recruitment process
  • We complete random drug and alcohol testing

How do I apply?

Expressions of interest outlining your suitability for this position are required to be submitted online via our Port Otago Careers page.

Please ensure that you include a cover letter and a copy of your up-to-date CV along with your application.

Applications close 5pm Friday 2nd May 2025.
