Associate Veterinarian (Full or Part-Time)

Location: Monroe Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic, a program of the Humane Society of Union County

Reports to: Medical Director

Job Summary

The Monroe Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic is seeking a Full or Part-Time Associate Veterinarian to join our mission-driven team. We specialize in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) services and basic wellness care for community pets and rescue animals across Union County and surrounding areas.

This role offers a unique opportunity to hone surgical skill, practice with purpose, and contribute to meaningful outcomes every single day — all within a supportive, values-driven clinic committed to animal welfare.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • No night or holiday shifts; optional weekend shifts may occasionally be available
  • Mission-driven work that directly reduces pet overpopulation and suffering
  • Streamlined clinical focus with minimal client consults, allowing for medical precision
  • Collaborative, supportive team environment
  • Generous paid time off
  • Annual continuing education allowance, including conference fees and travel
  • At-cost veterinary care for your own pets
  • Work that truly matters — every procedure saves lives
  • As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, employment may qualify for federal student loan forgiveness programs
  • Located in Monroe, NC — a beautiful small town with historic charm, just close enough to Charlotte for your city fix

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries (averaging ~20+/day)
  • Provide basic wellness care (vaccines, deworming, etc.) for HSUC’s rescue animals and pets in the community
  • Follow Association of Shelter Veterinarians HQHVSN guidelines
  • Collaborate with the clinic team on complex cases and operational matters
  • Demonstrate empathy and professionalism in all interactions

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift animals or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
  • Stand for extended periods during surgery or treatment
  • Kneel and bend frequently while handling animals

Qualifications

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent from an accredited veterinary program
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in North Carolina
  • Experience with HQHVSN surgery preferred; shelter medicine background a plus
  • Comfortable handling feral and unsocialized animals with compassion
  • Committed to ongoing professional development and best practices in veterinary care

Dispelling Common Myths About HQHVSN Clinics

We understand that high-volume clinics are often misunderstood. Here’s what sets us apart:

  • High-volume does not mean low-quality — we follow gold-standard protocols and achieve excellent outcomes
  • Our work is streamlined, not impersonal — every patient receives focused care
  • Limited client interaction allows veterinarians to concentrate on clinical excellence
  • HQHVSN is ideal for new grads seeking rapid skill development in a supportive setting
  • Our team is deeply compassionate, serving animals most in need with purpose and care
