If you enjoy a challenge and have a passion for Haematology, then why not come and join our Haematology team at Te Whatu Ora - Counties Manukau. We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist as a Coagulation Technical Specialist.

Middlemore Hospital is a 950 bed Hospital and is one of New Zealand’s busiest and diverse teaching hospitals with a large Emergency Department, Dialysis Unit, National Burns Unit, Regional Plastic Surgery, NNU and SCBU, ICU, and paediatrics, general surgical, orthopaedic and medical wards.


The Haematology department is situated on site at the Middlemore campus and provides a 24-hour service for Middlemore and Kidz First Hospitals and the Manukau Health Park. The Haematology department is involved in teaching technical and medical staff and has close links with the Clinical Haematology service. We perform a range of diagnostic haematology testing using automated systems for cell counts, cell morphology and coagulation testing and have a special haematology section which assists with the collection and processing of bone marrow samples and performs haemoglobinopathy and thalassaemia screening. Our department is a dynamic, progressive laboratory run by a professional and well-motivated team.

The successful applicant will be rostered in all sections of the Haematology Laboratory. They will be required to work some weekend and evening duties and be available to participate in a call roster. They will also support the Coagulation Section Head and have additional responsibilities that will include the following:

Maintenance of coagulation instrumentation
Troubleshooting instrument and reagent problems
Stock control and implementation of lot number changes
Management of Internal and External Quality Control
Training of staff, BMLS students and Registrars
Evaluation of new methods, reagents and instrumentation as required
Ensuring that results are produced in accordance with departmental protocols and in compliance with the ISO 15189 standard
The successful applicant will have had at least 5 years’ experience working as a Scientist in a Haematology Laboratory, ideally with an interest and experience in special coagulation testing

Essential

  • Eligible to work in New Zealand
  • Registered member of the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand
  • Hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate
  • Computer skills and experience with health and safety management are required
