Support strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance and community-led research. As Community Engagement Officer on the “Breaking down the impact of structural racism…” project, you will play a central role in building and maintaining respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, young people, and community representatives. Join a dedicated research team focused on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents to challenge systemic inequities in education and health.

Kurongkurl Katitjin
This position sits with the Australian Indigenous HealthInfonet at Kurongkurl Katitjin Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research. The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet national, evidence-based health information service and online resource focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
It gathers, analyses and presents high-quality research, data and knowledge to inform policy, practice, research and community understanding in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health in Australia.
About the Opportunity
You will join a team of skilled researchers who are committed to social justice. The Breaking down the Impacts project seeks to understand the impact of structural racism in health and education settings on Aboriginal adolescents' wellbeing as well as co-design anti-racism strategies. As a member of the team you will be responsible for:
Assisting the project lead in coordination and support engagement with the Project Governance Group and Aboriginal Community Youth Co-researchers including supporting scheduling and facilitation of meetings, taking minutes, and arranging catering.
Work closely with the team to support delivery of the project’s research aims and objectives through processes and activities that are community-led and culturally secure.
Administer and provide input into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement strategies.
Assist the project team to prepare and disseminate project information and outputs, including accessing ECU systems and databases to provide information to assist in drafting reports for publication
Contribute to the development of communication strategies for disseminating project information and promoting the project to Aboriginal communities, organisations, and service providers, using language and formats that are appropriate for a wide range of audiences.
About you
You will be able to demonstrate:
Expertise in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community engagement gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth social and emotional wellbeing and the impacts of racism on wellbeing.
Demonstrated capacity to work with communities to understand and respond to their needs.
Well-developed interpersonal skills, specifically a proactive attitude to relationship building including the necessary language skills and motivation to build relationships with all relevant stakeholders.
Ability to organise and present information, views and concepts in a concise, understandable and interesting format for a variety of audiences, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents and caregivers. Involves determining the most appropriate format and vehicle for delivering information to ensure the audiences understanding of the message and its intent.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to set objectives, plan activities, and manage time and resources to support the progress of project objectives.
