Commercial Glass Estimator

The Commercial Glass Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates and bid proposals for commercial glazing projects. This role analyzes architectural drawings, specifications, and project requirements to determine material quantities, labor costs, equipment needs, and subcontractor pricing.

The Estimator plays a critical role in protecting company profitability by ensuring bids are complete, well-scoped, and aligned with project requirements. This position collaborates closely with project managers, purchasing, fabrication, and leadership to ensure smooth project handoff after award.

Key Responsibilities

Bid Review & Project Evaluation

  • Review project invitations, drawings, specifications, and addenda to determine project scope and requirements.
  • Evaluate bid documents to identify scope gaps, risks, and special project conditions.
  • Determine which systems the company will pursue (storefront, curtainwall, interior glass, aluminum entrances, misc. glazing, etc.).
  • Identify required subcontractors, specialty vendors, and long-lead materials.

Quantity Takeoffs

  • Perform accurate material takeoffs from architectural drawings and specifications.
  • Quantify glazing systems, aluminum framing, hardware, accessories, sealants, and related materials.
  • Identify field labor requirements based on system complexity and installation conditions.
  • Maintain organized takeoff records and backup documentation.

Cost Estimating

  • Develop detailed project cost estimates including: Material costs, Labor hours, Equipment, Subcontractors, Freight and delivery, Project-specific requirements
  • Solicit pricing from vendors and subcontractors when required.
  • Verify current pricing for glass, aluminum systems, hardware, and specialty materials.

Proposal Development

  • Prepare formal bid proposals and scope letters.
  • Clearly define inclusions, exclusions, qualifications, and assumptions.
  • Ensure proposals align with project requirements and company capabilities.
  • Submit bids through required platforms and track deadlines.

Bid Tracking & Follow-Up

  • Maintain bid logs and track submitted proposals.
  • Participate in post-bid reviews and negotiations when requested.
  • Follow up with general contractors regarding bid status.

Project Handoff

  • Assist in project turnover to the Project Management team when a project is awarded.
  • Provide clear documentation of estimate assumptions, scope, and pricing.
  • Participate in handoff meetings to ensure continuity between estimating and operations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain current knowledge of: Commercial glazing systems, Industry pricing trends, Construction methods, New products and technologies, Support improvements to estimating processes, templates, and cost databases.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial glass estimating or glazing construction.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of commercial glazing systems such as: Storefront systems, Curtainwall, Aluminum entrances, Interior glass systems, Miscellaneous glazing
  • Experience performing material takeoffs and cost estimating.
  • Familiarity with estimating software and digital takeoff tools.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational ability.
  • Experience with glazing estimating software (such as Bluebeam, OST, SmartBid, True Construct, Procore, etc.).
  • Knowledge of aluminum system manufacturers (Kawneer, Oldcastle, etc.).
  • Experience estimating projects ranging from $50,000 to $5M+.
  • Understanding of construction scheduling and field installation methods.
