POSITION SUMMARY:
The Controller is the head financial leader at VPG Enterprise, over both the construction and the property management company, and reports directly to the COO. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations, and effective financial management across multiple entities, properties, and construction projects. The Controller will lead the accounting team and work closely with operations, property managers, and project managers to support financial decision-making.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITES:
· Directly supervises accounting staff, including Staff Accountant(s), Accounting Assistant(s), and any outsourced accounting resources
· Responsible for onboarding, training, coaching, performance management, and professional development of accounting team members
· Assigns workload priorities and ensures timely, accurate completion of accounting deliverables and close processes
· Partners with executive leadership to support strategic planning and organizational growth
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
· Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities
· Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes
· Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning
· Ensure compliance with GAAP, lender requirements, and local/state regulations
· Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting policies
· Coordinate audits, reviews, and tax filings with external auditors and CPA firms
· Support insurance audits, cost certifications, and lender inspections
· Collaborate with Construction operations, Property Management, Holdings, and executive leadership teams
· All other duties as assigned
Construction:
· Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and schedule preparation
· Coordination with project managers on change orders, cost-to-complete, and margin protection
· Review and approval of subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, and retainage releases
· Compliance with construction contract terms, including billing milestones and required backup documentation
Property Management:
· Monthly property-level performance packages for ownership (P&L, balance sheet, cash, and key KPIs)
· Coordination with property managers on delinquencies, occupancy, and NOI performance
· Accurate handling of owner distributions, reserve accounts, and lender/partner reporting
· Ownership and optimization of core systems: QuickBooks, Yardi, and related banking/payroll systems
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITES:
· Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting practices
· Proficiency in accounting and property management software
· Deep knowledge of job cost structures for commercial general contractors
· Advanced Excel skills
· Experience with job cost accounting and construction draws
· Strong leadership and team management abilities
· High attention to detail and accuracy
· Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
· Proactive problem-solver with a hands-on approach
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
· 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including management responsibilities
· Prior experience in property management and/or construction accounting required
· Experience with multi-entity and multi-property accounting
· Experience implementing or optimizing construction accounting modules, including Procore or similar integrated tools preferred
· CPA or CMA designation preferred
· Experience scaling accounting operations in a growing organization preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer workstation
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, or reach within the office environment. Reasonable accommodation can be made for individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds occasionally
- Ability to use personal vehicle to travel occasionally to properties, job sites and meetings as required
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
