Customer Service And Shelter Support

The Animal Management team at the Christchurch City Council work hard to ensure the community is safe and protected from nuisance and dangerous dogs, and has a strong focus towards reuniting dogs with their owners. This position ensures the ongoing management, control and welfare of animals throughout our city continues.

This role is a part-time position, for a minimum of 15 hours per week Friday, Saturday, Sunday , you will also have the opportunity to cover absences so may work up to a maximum of 37.5 hours per week.

You will get to assist the animal management team by delivering excellent customer service to our hapori and ensuring the best outcomes for the animals under our care, through accurate and consistent information and administrative support. Your responsibilities include:

  • Providing friendly, helpful and courteous front-line services, whilst demonstrating empathy and resilience
  • Provide professional care and welfare to animals housed in the shelter facility through feeding, cleaning, and exercise of dogs.
  • Receive and accurately update the Councils dog register database
  • Provide educational information to the public about the control, care and welfare needs of animals and responsible dog ownership
  • Provide general care and maintenance of the shelter complex
  • Complete the associated documentation in respect of the release of dogs from the shelter.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be competent in using systems that assist in essential administration functions such as financial transactions and data entry.
  • Have strong communication skills with the ability to exercise empathy when dealing with the needs of our customers who are often in highly emotional situations
  • Be physically fit as daily exercising of our dogs and cleaning is essential to the role

Advanced animal handling skills are required, however, training in animal behaviour and temperament assessment, dog micro-chipping and verification and extra animal handling processes will be provided.

Hours of work - Friday 7 hours, Saturday 9am-1pm, Sunday 9am - 1pm. 15 hours per week minimum.
Position - Permanent Part-time
Location - This position is primarily based at 10 Metro Place, Bromley
Salary - The hourly rate for this role goes from $27.80 - $31.68. Starting rates will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
