Job Purpose
The Customs Clearance Operator is responsible for managing customs documentation and ensuring the smooth and compliant movement of goods across borders. This role supports the Customs Manager in maintaining accurate records, preparing declarations, and liaising with relevant authorities to ensure full compliance with customs and food safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and submit accurate customs declarations via CDS (Customs Declaration Service) and AIS (Automated Import System) for goods entering Ireland, the UK, and the EU.
- Ensure full compliance with customs regulations, import/export controls, and food safety legislation.
- Manage and maintain comprehensive shipment and customs records, including Transit (T1) procedures, pre- and post-lodged declarations, and mixed freight consignments.
- Prepare and manage CHEDs (Common Health Entry Documents) for food products, ensuring compliance with import requirements.
- Liaise proactively with freight forwarders, customs agents, and regulatory authorities on customs clearance, inspections, and documentation.
- Use the INIS DAFM portal to submit pre-notifications for food imports and maintain accurate regulatory records.
- Assist the Customs Manager with audits, compliance reporting, and regulatory checks, ensuring all processes meet statutory requirements.
- Investigate and resolve customs discrepancies or compliance issues, providing guidance to internal teams on best practices for clearance procedures.
- Monitor and stay updated on changes in customs legislation, EU trade rules, and border control requirements affecting the transport and clearance of goods.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Proven experience in customs clearance or logistics operations, ideally within the food sector.
- Strong knowledge of EU customs regulations, procedures, and documentation.
- Experience with Transit (T1) procedures, pre/post-lodged declarations, CHEDs, and customs declarations via CDS and AIS/AES.
- Good understanding of the requirements for the carriage of food across borders.
- Good working knowledge of Dublin Port inspection procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in MS Office and customs clearance software.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Formal qualifications in logistics, supply chain, or customs operations.
- Experience in a transport or freight forwarding environment.
- Knowledge of trade compliance and international shipping regulations.
