About Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center:

Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center is a ministry of the United Methodist Church of New England, dedicated to providing transformative experiences in a natural setting. We are seeking a Facilities and Maintenance Director who will be the primary person responsible for maintaining and repairing the camp’s buildings, equipment, and grounds. This is a hands-on role requiring a broad range of skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage priorities efficiently. While this position operates primarily as a team of one, seasonal assistants or volunteers may be available during peak times.

Position Overview:

The Facilities and Maintenance Director is responsible for the upkeep and functionality of Aldersgate’s facilities, ensuring a safe and well-maintained environment for campers, retreat guests, and staff. This role is ideal for a self-sufficient problem solver with strong technical skills, an ability to work within a budget, and a commitment to keeping camp facilities running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities:Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform daily maintenance and repair of cabins, dining halls, restrooms, offices, and recreational areas.
  • Conduct hands-on carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repairs as needed.
  • Maintain and repair small gas engines, including mowers, chainsaws, and generators.
  • Ensure all equipment, including kitchen appliances, groundskeeping tools, and vehicles, is operational and well-maintained.
  • Schedule routine inspections and coordinate emergency repairs with outside vendors when necessary.

Groundskeeping and Property Management

  • Maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of camp grounds, including trails, outdoor activity areas, and landscaping.
  • Handle seasonal tasks such as mowing, tree removal, snow plowing, and trail maintenance.
  • Monitor and maintain water and waste management systems to meet health and environmental regulations.

Safety and Compliance

  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure facilities meet fire codes, health regulations, and American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation requirements.
  • Implement and oversee safety protocols, including emergency procedures and signage.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Work with regulatory agencies to address compliance issues.

Planning and Budgeting

  • Develop and manage the facilities budget, prioritizing cost-effective maintenance solutions.
  • Plan and track repairs, supplies, and future projects.
  • Work with leadership to develop long-term capital improvements and infrastructure upgrades.

Independent Work and Seasonal Assistance

  • Work independently for most of the year, managing all maintenance tasks with limited assistance.
  • Train and oversee seasonal maintenance assistants or volunteers when available.
  • Manage workload effectively, balancing routine upkeep with urgent repairs.

Guest and Camper Experience

  • Ensure facilities are welcoming, clean, and functional for campers and retreat guests.
  • Support program teams by setting up and maintaining activity spaces.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve facility-related issues during camp sessions and events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 21 years old with a valid driver’s license.
  • Proven experience in facility maintenance, repair, and project management.
  • Strong technical knowledge in carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, small gas engines, and general maintenance.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and vehicles (trucks, tractors, utility vehicles).
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks without direct supervision.
  • Experience managing budgets and planning long-term maintenance needs.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to Aldersgate’s mission.
  • Familiarity with ACA, state, and federal safety standards preferred.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift 50 pounds frequently and heavier items occasionally with assistance.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working at heights.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) for extended periods.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and vehicles requiring manual dexterity and coordination.
  • Traverse uneven dirt roads and rugged terrain as needed.

Working Conditions:

  • Work occurs indoors and outdoors, across all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, uneven terrain, and potential hazards from power tools and machinery.
  • Mostly independent work with occasional support from seasonal staff or volunteers.
  • Flexibility is required, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call availability for urgent maintenance needs.
  • Noise levels vary from quiet office settings to loud environments with equipment, tools, and large groups.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year

  • Weekends as needed
