THE JOB

As the Lead Environment Artist of the talented and passionate Environment Art team behind RETURNAL, you will work closely with our Art teams and external partners to drive the next evolution of Housemarque games.

Your main responsibilities include shaping and executing the project’s vision for Environment Art, leading and mentoring a highly talented team, and optimizing workflows for seamless collaboration across disciplines and external partners. You will play a key part in bringing Housemarque’s unique and creative environments to life in cutting-edge 1st party Sony games.

What will your day-to-day look like?

  • Work directly with Art Direction to establish a cohesive visual vision for the project, break down how it can be achieved, and organize your team to bring it to life.
  • Demonstrate expertise in AAA environment creation, from blockout to release, while collaborating across disciplines.
  • Set quality standards and benchmarks in collaboration with Principal Artists, reinforcing them through consistent and proactive feedback.
  • Solve complex development challenges, ensuring that both gameplay needs and artistic direction are met.
  • Collaborate with leadership, management, and production to establish workflows that deliver high-quality results within scope and on schedule.
  • Work closely with Technical and VFX Artists to develop tools and pipelines that uphold Housemarque’s signature technical excellence.
  • Mentor and coach artists, advancing their skill sets and professionalism through guidance, one-on-ones, and hands-on work.
  • Communicate effectively with all disciplines and external partners, ensuring alignment and smooth collaboration across the team.
  • Foster an environment of autonomy and self-reliance, maintaining momentum and navigating uncertainty with confidence.
  • Support external development, ensuring that external teams receive the same reviews, guidance, standards, and communication as internal artists.

What will help you to be successful in this role?

  • 8+ years of experience as an Environment Artist in AAA games, with at least two shipped projects and experience leading a team of 5–15 professionals.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills, with the ability to facilitate collaboration and present ideas effectively.
  • A constant drive for cohesion, inspiration, and enthusiasm, fostering a high-performing and motivated team.
  • A relentless passion for innovation, pushing the boundaries of visual excellence as we evolve Housemarque’s artistic direction.
  • A results-driven mindset, taking ownership of your team’s deliverables and ensuring work is completed on time and at a high standard.
  • A deep passion for game art, with solid artistic fundamentals and a keen understanding of how art enhances gameplay experiences.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, paired with proactive communication habits.

What we offer to you?

  • Competitive salary, benefits, healthcare, Nordic work-life balance
  • Tailored immigration and relocation package to help you get settled into Finland
  • State-of-the-art studio facilities in the heart of Helsinki
  • Freedom, flexibility and openness in a collaborative culture
  • Brilliant, diverse and empathetic colleagues to work with
  • Exciting and ambitious projects executed with the best tools
  • Access to Playstation Studios collaboration, games and more!
