Overview:

We’re seeking a full-time Litigation Paralegal to join our El Segundo, CA-based team — an essential role in our growing firm. This position is ideal for a bilingual (Spanish/English) paralegal who thrives in a fast-paced, supportive environment and wants to make a meaningful impact.

At J. Hartley Law, APC, this role goes beyond support work — you’ll play a key part in moving cases forward efficiently, spotting gaps, and ensuring no opportunity for our clients is ever missed.

What you’ll do:

  • Litigation Support & Discovery: Use your working knowledge of litigation and strong critical thinking skills to prepare and respond to discovery. Proactively identify missing information, anticipate what’s needed next, and take initiative to fill in gaps. Assist in reviewing discovery responses and draft meet and confer letters to address deficiencies and keep the case moving forward.
  • Case Strategy: Support case strategy by applying strategic foresight and an investigative mindset to evaluate case strengths — especially in nuanced areas like premises liability and complex medical injuries. Leverage your deep understanding of personal injury litigation to surface key facts, identify leverage points, and support the attorney with the insights needed to drive impactful legal decisions.
  • Medical Record Analysis: Analyze and compile medical records with an investigative eye, ensuring completeness and accuracy while anticipating what details may be critical to the case. Highlight relevant facts and organize materials to support a clear, strategic presentation of the client’s injuries.
  • Deposition Preparation: Assist in preparing clients for depositions by leveraging your knowledge of the process to identify key issues, gather essential documents, and clarify important injury details — ensuring both the attorney and client are equipped for a smooth, effective session.
  • Motion and Filing Prep: Assist with drafting and organizing basic motions and filing legal documents as needed.
  • Expert Coordination: Initiate contact with expert witnesses, assemble and organize case materials, and ensure timely delivery of documents.
  • Case Progress Management: Take ownership of case timelines, helping move matters efficiently through litigation by tracking deadlines and clearing bottlenecks.
  • Client Support: Serve as a steady, compassionate point of contact for clients — answering questions, guiding them through the litigation process, and helping ease concerns so they feel supported every step of the way.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the attorney and the team to keep cases moving efficiently, share insights, and step in where needed to maintain momentum and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience: At least 3–5 years of paralegal experience in personal injury litigation, with strong knowledge of California procedures and case strategy.
  • Solid Litigation Understanding: A strong foundation in personal injury litigation is required, with proven success in handling discovery and drafting motions. Substantial experience with premises liability cases is required, as these make up a large portion of the firm’s caseload.
  • Medical Records Proficiency: Must have a sharp eye for reviewing, organizing, and interpreting medical records — understanding what’s relevant, what’s missing, and how those details shape the strength of the case.
  • Bilingual Fluency: Fluency in both English and Spanish is required to effectively support and communicate with our diverse client base.
  • Strong Communicator: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You can clearly draft letters, meet and confer correspondence, and case updates that are polished, professional, and effective.
  • Investigative Thinking: Brings a problem-solving mindset, strong critical thinking skills, and the ability to anticipate case needs before they arise. You know how to connect the dots and dig deeper when something doesn’t add up.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision matters — whether reviewing records, drafting discovery, or organizing case files, you consistently catch the small things that make a big difference.
  • Proactive Task Management: Thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes initiative, and moves cases forward without waiting for instruction. The ideal candidate naturally identifies next steps and follows through to get things done.
  • Growth Mindset and Culture Fit: You’re excited to grow with the firm, learn directly from an experienced trial attorney, and contribute meaningfully to a positive, collaborative work environment.

Why you should work here:

  • Direct Mentorship: You’ll work closely with our founder, a seasoned trial attorney who believes in mentoring the right person and is committed to helping you grow through hands-on guidance and meaningful case involvement.
  • Substantive Case Involvement: Play a central role in case development alongside the attorney — not just handling tasks, but actively thinking through strategy, uncovering key details, and helping drive the case forward at every stage. You’re not just supporting the case — you’re helping build it.
  • Positive Environment: Join a supportive team that values collaboration, communication, and compassion for both clients and colleagues.
  • Meaningful Impact: Your work directly affects the outcome of real people’s lives. From navigating complex legal matters to helping clients feel seen and supported, you’ll play a critical role in helping them move forward after life-altering events.
  • Foundational Role with Leadership Potential: This is a key position at a pivotal time in the firm’s growth. As the first in this role, you’ll help shape its direction and build the systems that scale. For the right person, this is a rare opportunity to grow into a leadership position as the firm expands — ideal for someone ambitious, self-driven, and energized by a startup-style environment.
