NOHFC Program Coordinator Overview
Position Details
The proposed Program Coordinator Intern position addresses a growing labour shortage in Northern Ontario’s nonprofit and community development sector, particularly in youth recreation and program coordination. Many organizations in this region face difficulty recruiting and retaining skilled staff with experience in program design, outreach, and partnership building. This internship will help fill that gap while developing a new professional equipped to support youth engagement initiatives in Northern communities.
The position is ideally suited for a new entrant to the workforce or an underemployed individual seeking to establish a career in community services. Under the guidance of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Children’s Foundation, the intern will gain hands-on experience in program development, delivery, promotion, and evaluation—skills that are highly transferable within the nonprofit, municipal, and social service sectors.
By assisting with the development, implementation, and expansion of the Send-A-Kid-to-Camp and P.L.A.Y. (Positive Leisure Activities for Youth) programs—with emphasis on P.L.A.Y.—the intern will build capacity in community programming, youth engagement, and public awareness. This opportunity supports workforce development in Northern Ontario by preparing a motivated individual to contribute long-term to the region’s social and economic wellbeing.
Specific Key duties
The Program Coordinator Intern will assist in the development, coordination, and expansion of the Send-A-Kid-to-Camp (SAKTC) and P.L.A.Y. (Positive Leisure Activities for Youth) programs, with a primary focus on enhancing and growing the P.L.A.Y. program. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director to review, develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to improve program efficiency, outreach, and impact.
Key duties include:
Oversee coordination of both programs, supporting participant recruitment, registration, and follow-up.
Work with the Executive Director to train and supervise summer staff and volunteers.
Strengthen partnerships with community agencies, camps, and recreation providers to expand program reach.
Conduct site visits and evaluations to ensure program quality and safety standards.
Develop and maintain a database of participant stories, photos, surveys, and testimonials for grant, marketing, and social media use.
Review and update existing program policies, handbooks, and operational procedures to ensure alignment with current needs.
Prepare mid-term and final reports with recommendations for program and office improvements, and implement approved changes.
This is a 12-month contract for 35hrs a week.
Support marketing, public awareness, and fundraising initiatives related to both programs.
This opportunity is proudly supported by: Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation
