We have an exciting opportunity for a Regional Standards Advocacy Manager at UL Standards & Engagement. This is a hybrid opportunity based in our Ottawa, Canada office.
The Regional Standards Advocacy Manager will lead partnerships and market engagement strategy, to drive the adoption of safety standards in Canadian and international markets through education and advocacy, and advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Regional Standards Advocacy Manager will create a strong partnership with the existing ULSE standards development staff in Ottawa to identify and advance strategic opportunities to broaden the organization’s presence, relevance and impact across the international safety standards environment, with a primary focus in Canada. With a strong understanding of industry and regulatory dynamics, The Regional Standards Advocacy Manager will develop and execute strategic engagement initiatives in Canada and partner with policymakers, regulatory authorities, standards bodies, and industry stakeholders to advance safety outcomes and strengthen the organization’s influence within the international standards landscape.
As a representative of ULSE and thought partner to senior leadership, the Regional Standards Advocacy Manager will amplify the organization’s standards development work, in critical focus areas including battery safety, fire safety, electrification and sustainability, while cultivating strategic partnerships that expand impact and reinforce global harmonization of safety standards.

What you’ll learn and achieve:
As the Regional Standards Advocacy Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:
  • Develop and implement policy and engagement strategy at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels to advance ULSE’s priority areas of battery safety, fire, electrification, and sustainability. Identify opportunities to drive the organization’s expansion and influence within the safety standards landscape.
  • Lead and execute ULSE’s government affairs strategy in Canada, including setting policy priorities and leading stakeholder engagement efforts with policymakers, agencies and government audiences. Coordinate ULSE participation in Canadian standards setting bodies to promote use of UL standards globally.
  • Manage education and advocacy programs and project activities to support the overall global standards strategy in the region. Scope and lead end-to-end project plans, ensure deadlines are met, and actively manage milestones and priorities.
  • Establish and cultivate robust relationships with governmental and non-governmental entities, including national standards bodies, local representatives of international standards bodies, legislators, regulators, code officials, industry leaders, fire safety professionals, consumer groups, advocacy groups to advance ULSE’s standards and public policy priorities.
  • Serve as a thought leader and represent ULSE within Canada at key meetings, forums, symposia, and conferences. Elevate our standards development and safety advocacy work in the region through presentations, articles, roundtables, panel participation, and other platforms to educate and advance standards initiatives.
  • Establish presence as a subject matter expert with ability to influence policies and regulations related to safety, security, and sustainability within Canada.
  • Identify communications needs, design targeted, high-impact content and materials that effectively support engagement, advocacy and strategic objectives.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on regional relationships, regulatory dynamics, and local market needs. Track and measure engagement outcomes, partnership effectiveness, and regional impact to inform strategic priorities and executive reporting.
  • Contribute to department initiatives as needed.

  • Broad understanding and expertise in municipal and federal government engagement, and policy regulations landscape.
  • Deep understanding of national and international standards development across North America and Internationally.
  • Subject matter knowledge across domains, including battery technologies, fire protection, electrification and sustainability.
  • Project management skills with experience developing project timelines, scope, and managing project resources, with demonstrated ability to lead small project teams or workstreams. Ability to execute end-to-end processes independently.
  • Excellent collaboration skills in leading and participating in multi-disciplinary teams, and also in developing partnerships with external stakeholders to deliver impactful results.
  • Strong communication and engagement skills, able to develop and implement comprehensive communication and engagement plans, as well as effectively communicate project goals, requirements and progress to various stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills, with ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with WTO/TBT and Regional Standards Development Processes and Structure as well as regulatory and government structure.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape.
Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:
  • Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree in Business Administration, International Affairs, or Public Policy preferred.
  • Minimum 9 years of related work experience.
  • Experience in government relations, public policy, or advocacy.
  • Familiarity with local and international safety regulations and standards.
