Te Haeata/The Opportunity


The Waitangi Tribunal Unit provides a comprehensive range of services to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent commission of inquiry that inquires into and reports on claims submitted by Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975.

The Researcher/Analyst position description spans three teams within the Waitangi Tribunal Unit. We are currently seeking a hardworking, talented and motivated professional to join our Report Writing team.

To be successful in the role you will have strong verbal and written communication and analytical skills, and the ability to plan and prioritise work. You will be able to use your initiative and be an effective communicator with a strong focus on customer service. You will thrive in a fast-paced work environment with multiple workstreams.


We are looking for a team player who is highly collaborative and able to inspire and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


An understanding of, and commitment to, the work of the Waitangi Tribunal is essential and an understanding of te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori would be beneficial.

You will have a tertiary qualification in New Zealand history, Māori studies, public policy, law or other relevant disciplines, and preferably a post-graduate degree or relevant professional experience.

Report Writers are responsible for assisting with the drafting of Waitangi Tribunal reports and providing advice and analysis throughout the Tribunal report drafting process. You will be required to work closely with a wide range of people including other Tribunal Unit staff, the judiciary and Tribunal members.

Utu ā-tau/Salary


The appointing salary for this role will be between $72,634 and $100,846 based on skills and experience.
