Context

You will join the Scientific Instrumentation and Process Technology (SIPT) Unit. At the SIPT Unit, we are committed to advancing the frontiers of science and technology through the development of innovative instruments and methodologies across multiple domains, including nano-analytics, plasma and vapor deposition, optical diagnostics, and data-driven materials science. Our multidisciplinary team leverages cutting-edge expertise in charged particle optics, particle-matter interactions, optical manipulation and computational modeling to transform innovative ideas and concepts into cutting-edge instruments and methodologies. Our RDI portfolio encompasses all levels of technological maturity, ranging from fundamental concepts to experimental laboratory demonstrations, industrial-scale demonstrators, and market-ready solutions. In partnership with leading companies, we deliver tailored solutions to industry, research centers, and universities, addressing critical challenges in energy, microelectronics, life sciences, and industrial processes.

Within the SIPT Unit, you will lead the Advanced Instrumentation for Nano-Analytics (AINA) research group. The AINA group develops scientific instruments utilizing charged particle beams and correlative workflows based on these instruments. The focus areas include nano-imaging, nano-analysis, and in-situ process control for nano-fabrication. AINA’s multi-disciplinary team of experts in charged particle optics, mechanical engineers, electronics engineers, software engineers and application specialists transforms innovative ideas and concepts into cutting-edge instruments. In partnership with leading companies, the group delivers customized solutions to industry, research centers, and universities, addressing critical challenges in energy, microelectronics, life sciences, and space exploration.


How will you contribute?

As an R&T group Leader, you are an internationally recognized professional with proven track record of scientific and technology excellence in the domain of advanced instrumentation for nano-analytics based on charged particle beams. You will be responsible for the management, coordination, development, and performance of the AINA group.

Among other responsibilities, you will :

  • In coordination with the Head of Unit, define the group goals in alignment with the unit strategy. Define, implement, and monitor short/mid/long-term plans to achieve goals. Use a set of KPIs and dashboards and follow-up on operations and goals achievement. Anticipate events that could affect plans and take actions accordingly. Keep team’s activity aligned with the unit’s strategic roadmap.
  • Manage the group’s budget; forecast, implement, and follow-up its execution. Be accountable for the appropriate management and use of assigned resources.
  • Manage the group’s project portfolio ensuring a balanced mix of competitive/industry funded projects and a healthy cycle of new/ongoing/to-be-ended projects. Keep RDI projects and initiatives aligned to the unit’s strategy. Provide primary leadership to the submission and execution of RDI project.
  • Build collaborative relationships with the group's project partners and stakeholders and leverage these relationships to promote the group's projects and initiatives.
  • Make decisions considering various factors, risks, and impact. Promote and/or contribute to the improvement of RDI methods, processes, or tools to enhance the group’s performance.
  • Guide the group in reaching objectives and recognize effort and success. Act when conflicts appear.
  • Be primary responsible for talent management processes for your group (i.e., recruitment, training,performance evaluation, promotions, exits, etc.). Promote and monitor the development of the team's competencies and careers in line with the current and future needs of the group and the unit.
  • Ensure your team respects LIST values, ethical standards, research integrity, and internal rules. Lead by example.
  • Ensure that the work environment of your team remains safe and healthy.
  • Communicate and facilitate understanding of organizational objectives, acting as a bridge between senior management and team members.
  • Lead and foster world-class research activities in the domain of advanced instrumentation for nano-analytics, aligned with the priorities of the SIPT Unit and LIST.

Educational Background

  • PhD in a scientific field relevant to the AINA group

Experience and skills

  • A solid RDI work experience and scientific knowledge in the field of advanced instrumentation for nano-analytics based on charged particle beams.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Strong competencies in project management and work organization.
  • Experience in budget realisation and reporting.
  • Experience in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting innovation within teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with external partners and stakeholders, networking.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with and manage a group of highly skilled professionals with a broad range of cultural and professional background and to foster a collaborative work environment.

Language skills

  • Flawless knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of French and/or Luxembourgish and/or German is considered as an asset.
