The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, with the goal of fairness for all.

The Systemic Improvement Investigations team (SII) is one of the teams that undertake own-motion systemic interventions (investigations or formal resolutions) in relation to matters that the Chief Ombudsman considers appropriate to pursue.

Mo te turanga - About the role

The position of Senior Investigator is responsible for leading and contributing to systemic improvement investigations and interventions in accordance with the agreed work programme and assisting the Manager SII with the scoping, planning, reporting and delivery connected with these investigations.

This is a fast paced role that requires someone who can manage their time effectively and work to a high standard. You must be able to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, demonstrate the ability to positively influence others and communicate effectively. You must also be objective, dispassionate and have high levels of integrity. The role requires an understanding of public sector practice and the context in which public sector agencies operate. You may also assist with practice development and the mentoring of more junior staff.

He korero mou - About you

The preferred Senior Investigator candidate will have the following experience, skills, and attributes:

  • A legal or similar tertiary qualification.
  • At least 3-5 years' experience in undertaking and leading complex investigations, information gathering and analysis.
  • A proven ability to recognise and understand key Maori, disability and other cultural and human rights concepts, including the Treaty of Waitangi and equal employment opportunities.
  • Experience in undertaking research and analysis and conducting interviews to obtain key information.
  • Demonstrates understanding of current New Zealand public sector practice, the context in which public sector agencies operate, and the challenges they face.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, influencing and relationship management skills to build credibility within a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in mentoring, guiding and training others.
  • Demonstrates excellent analytical and problem solving skills at a senior level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organisation, planning and prioritisation skills in a high pressured environment.
  • Ability to deliver to key timeframes and to a high quality standard.

Depending on skills and experience the salary is expected to be between $108,181 and $141,987, with $135,226 being the midpoint.
