Position Overview
The Skilled Labourer is responsible for performing manual labour tasks related to laying pipe, infrastructure maintenance, and repair within the Irrigation District. This role requires physical endurance, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively in outdoor conditions.
The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, experience with tools and equipment, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Construction & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Perform manual labour tasks such as shoveling, lifting, bending, squatting, and standing for extended periods.
- Climb in and out of trenches, walk on uneven ground, and work in confined spaces.
- Direct equipment operators to adjust grade by moving earth, gravel, and other materials to achieve correct grade specifications.
- Assist in laying pipe, maintaining, and repairing irrigation infrastructure.
- Support mowing and weed whipping along District works.
- Assist with the District’s weed spraying program.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) regulations, Company Safety Policies, and environmental procedures.
- Identify on-site hazards and respond appropriately to prevent accidents.
- Work with ground disturbance and trenching safety standards to mitigate risks.
- Participate in safety training and emergency preparedness activities.
- Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe working condition.
Equipment Operation & Tool Use
- Operate hand tools and power tools efficiently and safely.
- Support the operation and maintenance of equipment used in irrigation infrastructure work.
- Follow operating procedures for working around Powered Mobile Equipment (PME).
Teamwork & Communication
- Work independently or as part of a crew, depending on the project needs.
- Follow instructions from supervisors and complete assigned work tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Maintain good working relationships with team members and supervisors.
General Responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Construction & Maintenance Manager.
- Work overtime as required, depending on project deadlines and operational needs.
- Report to the Park Lake Shop for daily assignments (own transportation required).
What We Are Looking For
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with manual labour, trenching, and ground disturbance safety.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including extreme weather.
- Strong problem-solving skills and hazard awareness.
- Experience with hand tools and power tools.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills.
- Class 1 or Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement ("Q") is beneficial.
- Construction Safety Training System (CSTS 2020) Fundamentals certification.
- Working Around Powered Mobile Equipment (PME) certification.
Education & Experience
- Education: Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- License: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Background Check: A Criminal Records Check is required if a position is offered.
- Knowledge of hoisting and rigging.
- Experience operating and maintaining equipment.
- Farm background is considered an asset.
Additional Information
- Position is based out of Park Lake Shop (own transportation is required).
- Overtime may be required, depending on operational demands.
Working Conditions
· Weather exposure: field work may involve working in hot, cold, rainy, windy etc. conditions depending on the region and season
· Some job sites may be in rural or remote locations which will require driving between locations.
· Moderate to high physical demands as this position includes walking along canals, climbing into ditches or reservoirs and inspecting values and gates.
