ARBI is a nonprofit community-based rehabilitation centre providing neurorehabilitation and family support for survivors of moderate-severe acquired brain injury. For nearly 50 years, ARBI has been recognized as a pioneer in community-based brain injury rehabilitation using a combination of professional staff and trained volunteers. Our staff are relentlessly dedicated to the progress of each client we support.

Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Program Director, the Social Worker works directly with clients and families to provide information, education, and guidance on matters related to legal resources, housing, finances, mental health, addiction, and community supports.

This role plays an important part in delivering client-centered care through psychosocial assessments, therapeutic support, and system navigation. The Social Worker prepares written reports outlining findings and recommendations, while working closely with an interdisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and effective care for clients and their families.

By supporting clients through complex life situations and transitions, the Social Worker helps ensure access to appropriate resources and services, contributing to improved quality of life and long-term outcomes. The successful candidate will also support program development and ongoing service improvement under the direction of the Program Director.

Key Responsibility Areas

1. Direct Client Care & Support – 45%

Responsible for providing direct client services, including assessment, counseling, and therapeutic support to clients and families.

  • Conduct intake and psychosocial assessments
  • Build therapeutic relationships with clients and families
  • Provide orientation, education, and individual and family counseling
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to support client care plans

2. Care Coordination, Systems Navigation & Advocacy – 35%

Responsible for coordinating care and supporting clients and families in navigating complex systems and accessing appropriate resources.

  • Work closely with the psychologist and interdisciplinary team
  • Participate in family meetings and support caregiver groups
  • Liaise with community providers to ensure continuity of care
  • Assist clients and families with guardianship, trusteeship, personal directives, and financial matters

3. Documentation, Administration & Program Development – 20%

Responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, completing reporting requirements, and contributing to program development.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records
  • Complete required reporting, including FSII surveys for Family & Community Support Services (FCSS)
  • Contribute to research and program development initiatives (e.g., caregiver support programs)
  • Participate in ongoing professional development

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Social Work (Master’s preferred)
  • Member in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)
  • Two to three (2–3) years of related experience; neurorehabilitation experience is an asset
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to manage crisis situations and challenging social behaviours due to the complexity of brain injury. There may be a high level of emotional intensity, requiring the ability to effectively support clients and families through complex and sensitive situations.

Driving is required as part of this role.

Occasional supervision of volunteers and/or practicum students, as applicable
