Job Summary

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER

POSITION TITLE: Spanish Teacher

SUPERVISES: Students

JOB GOAL:

To motivate each pupil to develop competencies, knowledge, and skills in aurally speaking, reading, and writing a foreign language, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to interpret to pupils the culture of the countries where foreiY1 language is spoken; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in foreign language communication.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Applicant must have a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate.

2. Proper endorsement in foreign language teaching field.

3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.

4. A bilingual/bicultural experience, preferred.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach skill and knowledge in foreign1 language instruction to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  • Develop pupil understanding and appreciation of culture of countries where the studied language is spoken.
  • Provide learning experiences which develop the basic communication skills, utilizing tape recorders and other equipment as appropriate.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Instruct pupils in safe operation of electronic equipment used in language instruction. Make minor adjustments and requests repairs as required.
  • Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports.
  • Control assigned district-owned instructional equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  • Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employ instructional method and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintains order in the classroom in a and just manner.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents foreducation related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provide nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keep students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, advanced course work at institutions of higher learning. Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
  • Assist the administration with and/or supervise and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  • In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  • Plan and enploy a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  • In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
  • Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  • Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The work is performed while standing or walking.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • The work at times requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull light weights.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Employees in this position will be required to work indoors in a standard office environment and come in direct contact with PCBOE central staff, district staff, and the public.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
