Lead the Delivery of Access to Our National Collections

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o ngā hau e whā, nau mai, haere mai. Greetings to the many authorities, voices, and experts of the world.

We are seeking an experienced and people-focused Team Leader Access Services to lead a key operational team at the National Library and Archives New Zealand. In this role, you will oversee the delivery of integrated management and logistics services across all Wellington-based collections, ensuring access services run smoothly, efficiently, and with a strong customer focus.

You will work closely with other leaders and teams to enable access to collections, manage daily workflows, support reading room services, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This role is essential to ensuring that the public, researchers, and other users can easily and reliably access New Zealand’s documentary heritage.

You will also play an important part in strengthening Māori access to Mātauranga Māori, and in fostering a positive and resilient team culture that upholds Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and the spirit of service.

What we’re looking for

We’re seeking a collaborative and proactive leader with:

  • Experience leading operational teams in a complex environment, with a strong focus on customer service
  • Strong skills in logistics, workflow management, and resource planning
  • A proven ability to build high performing, agile teams and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Knowledge or experience in the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) is desirable but not essential
  • Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to work collegially across teams and stakeholders
  • An understanding of Mātauranga Māori and a commitment to improving Māori access to collections
  • Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively with Māori, including the use of te reo Māori and tikanga practices, or a willingness to learn

You will be solutions-focused, organised, and motivated to deliver outstanding services that connect people to New Zealand’s taonga.
