Tech Lead - Cloud Engineering

An exciting opportunity to join NZ Customs as a Cloud Engineering Technical Lead is now available. This role is a full-time permanent position based in our Wellington Customhouse.

Reporting to the Manager Engineering, this is a critical role in providing technical leadership within the Cloud Engineering teams to deliver value and meet key business milestones. Accountable for applying modern cloud engineering principles and practices within Customs and across IS, the Cloud Engineering Technical Lead is responsible for development that aligns with key IS strategies and Product Roadmaps.

The Cloud Engineering Technical Lead will coach and mentor team members and lead the adoption and improvement of cloud engineering practices. It will lead the Engineering team in the following areas to set them up as centre of excellence for Cloud Engineering.

Cloud Platform Operations.

  • DevSecOps.
  • Complex Enterprise class Cloud environment Engineering / Operations.
  • IS Engineering Standup of Azure Cloud Platform and Migration of Legacy Services to Azure Cloud and Modernisation, Simplification, Automation of Customs Technologies.
  • Helping Lead delivery of 80% of Legacy infrastructure to be migrated to Cloud over next 2-3 years. Providing Customs with Modern Technologies and environments driving efficient Total cost of Ownership enabling Customs Business with stable, secure 24 x 7 Cloud Platform Operations.
  • Help Lead Delivery on IS Strategy and Long-term investment Plan, relevant to IS Engineering Strategy and plan.

You will need to be able demonstrate the following, to be successful in this role:

  • Strong experience (3-5 Years) as a Senior Cloud Engineer or Technical Lead with a passion for cloud technologies and moving the dial within a Large Enterprise organisation.
  • Proven experience in establishing cloud engineering practices across levels of an organisation and utilising those data and insights to ensure capability uplift and more effective delivery practices.
  • A deep understanding and proven experience applying cloud frameworks and methodologies, specifically Azure cloud services, with an ability to be agnostic of cloud platforms when assessing the most valuable way forward.
  • Understanding of and ability to build in security by design.
  • Familiarity with tools including Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, and others.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification e.g. BSC or comparable and/or relevant industry certification e.g. Microsoft certified DevOps Engineer Expert.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to understand complex challenges/concepts and articulate these in a simplified, easy to understand manner.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident* and be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years, (including five years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application.

A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years, (including five years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application who has travelled out of New Zealand for short periods of time i.e. > 6 months in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States or Canada and can provide police certificates from those countries for the period of absence.

Because of the nature of Customs' work you must have a clear Police record. Organisational security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs. You will also be required to pass a drug test. You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
