Volunteer Coordinator
Position Summary:
As a member of the Burlington Food Bank’s team, the Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in developing and supporting a strong volunteer team that enables the organization to deliver on its mission of feeding the hungry in our community in a dignified and timely manner.

This role is directly accountable for overseeing volunteers, volunteer management, and supporting program delivery.

Reporting Relationship:
The Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Burlington Food Bank Manager.

Hours:
30 hours per week including some weekend or evening hours.

Key Accountabilities

1. Recruitment and Training:
Identifies, recruits, and trains prospective volunteers for a variety of roles at the Burlington Food Bank.

  • Develops a supportive and inclusive team that works together effectively and respectfully
  • Responsible for recruitment, onboarding, training, motivating, evaluating, retaining, and celebrating all volunteers
  • Works to enhance volunteer orientation materials and ensures volunteers are equipped for success in their roles
  • Provides ongoing training opportunities and performance feedback

2. Volunteer Coordination:
Oversees the day-to-day coordination of Food Bank volunteers:

  • Uses a Volunteer Management System (VMS) (currently Better Impact) to ensure the Food Bank is properly staffed across all services
  • Recognizes scheduling gaps and recruits accordingly
  • Supports volunteers during shifts, providing direction and encouragement

3. Program Delivery:
Supports the effective and efficient delivery of services to clients:

  • Regularly assesses service delivery models to improve efficiencies and client experience
  • Organizes and assigns tasks for volunteers throughout their shifts
  • Engages volunteers in the evaluation and continuous improvement of programs
  • Develops polls, questionnaires, etc., to gather client feedback
  • Prepares delivery schedules and coordinates with volunteer drivers

4. Communication:
Coordinates and contributes to internal and external communication with staff, volunteers, clients, and donors:

  • Reviews and responds to phone calls and emails to the general BFB email address, directing inquiries as appropriate
  • Keeps volunteers informed of events, schedule changes, and opportunities
  • Notifies clients of any service or delivery model changes

5. Events and Activities:
Coordinates and supports Burlington Food Bank events such as the Ride to Provide, Hunger Action Month, and other program-related activities as required

6. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience in not-for-profit, food security, or volunteer management
  • Compassionate and empathetic towards individuals facing food insecurity, homelessness, and marginalization
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups including volunteers, staff, donors, and community members
  • A second language is an asset
  • Proficiency in computer applications including spreadsheets and databases
  • Crisis management education and/or experience is an asset
  • Experience in the non-profit sector, food distribution, or a related field is an asset

Hours: 30 hours per week
Salary Range: $34,000 - $40,000
