Job Summary/Basic Function


About the position:


The Audio Visual (AV) Technician’s role is to support and maintain in-house audio-visual equipment and non-print media assets. This includes operating, maintaining, distributing, installing, configuring, repairing, and upgrading various electronic products while ensuring their optimal performance. This person will also troubleshoot problem areas in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user training and assistance where required.

Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning:
  • Assist in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future AV equipment and University technology needs.
  • Document proper AV practices and procedures.


Acquisition & Deployment:
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of AV equipment contracts and supervise contract-based installations.
  • Advise on the purchase of new AV equipment; assist with its installation.
  • Conduct research on, and make recommendations for, AV products in support of procurement and development efforts.

Operational Management:
  • Set up, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot teleconferencing equipment, multimedia devices, televisions, monitors, projectors, recording equipment, speaker sets, , and other AV equipment.
  • Provide event support including sound reinforcement, stage lighting, video projection, livestreaming, and recording.
  • Coordinate with event organizers, faculty, and staff to plan and execute AV needs for academic and non-academic events.
  • Provide on-site technical assistance during classroom instruction, meetings, and special events.
  • Receive and respond to incoming calls, tickets, and/or e-mails regarding events or AV software/hardware problems.
  • Perform onsite analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex AV hardware problems and recommend and implement corrective solutions, including offsite repair as needed.
  • Perform regular preventive maintenance on AV systems, including cleaning, testing, firmware updates, and calibration of equipment.
  • Collaborate with IT and Facilities teams to support integration of AV systems into campus infrastructure.
  • Document instances of AV equipment failure, repair, installation, and removal.
  • Build and maintain a spare parts inventory for all AV equipment.
  • Transport AV equipment throughout facility using a motorized pallet jack or handcart.
  • Tag or label AV equipment owned by the organization; periodically audit inventories to mitigate risk of damage or theft.
  • Ensure compliance with university safety standards when installing or operating AV equipment.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of electronic equipment and systems and graduation from high school or vocational school, with successful completion of an approved electronic/AV course of study, OR graduation from a two-year college with major course work in electronics. Additional formal training in electronics/AV may be substituted year-for-year for experience up to a maximum of one year. OR An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of teleconferencing, presentation, and other AV hardware.
  • Comprehensive hands-on AV equipment support and troubleshooting experience.
  • Good knowledge of current network protocols, operating systems, software, and standards.
  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Experience:
    • operating tools, components, and peripheral accessories.
    • reading and understanding technical manuals, procedural documentation, and OEM guides.
    • conduct research into hardware products and issues as required.

  • Understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
