Controller

Job Summary:
The successful Controller within our organization will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities and will play a key role in ensuring the financial health of the organization. The primary accountabilities will include providing accurate financial information and analysis at the leadership and board level as well as budget creation and management, financial forecasting and reporting, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and optimizing financial performance as well as overseeing payroll, forecasting, accounts payable, accounts receivable.
Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Manage and control all financial aspects of the Calgary Downtown Association, including budgeting, forecasting, monitoring and financial reporting.
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the day-to-day processing of all accounting transactions, particularly all banking, accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
- Monitor cash flow, prepare cash forecasts, and manage investments to optimize financial performance.
- Complete the monthly account reconciliation process of all applicable General Ledger accounts and maintain all accounting records.
Accounting and Reporting:
- Prepare and review and present financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow and other financial reports on a regular basis at the leadership and board level.
- Conduct financial analysis and present findings to the management team for strategic decision-making.
- Prepare the quarterly financial reporting package for review by the Executive Director, prior to presenting it to the Finance & Audit Committee following the close of each quarter-end.
- Prepare quarterly GST return for submission to CRA.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
Financial Strategy:
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic planning and business growth.
- Assist in identifying opportunities for cost-saving measures and revenue enhancement.
Budgeting and Planning:
- Collaborate with department heads and senior management to create and manage the annual operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor budget performance, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions as needed.
- Forecasting,
Auditing and Compliance:
- Coordinate and support internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Support external audits performed by third parties in relation to any grants or funding agreements where an audit may be required.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate year-end audit with external firm, as well as related tax filings (T1044) and support advisors in tax strategy.
Payroll and Benefits Administration:
- Oversee payroll processing and ensure accurate and timely payment to all employees.
- Administer employee benefits programs and coordinate with HR for compliance.
Financial Software and Systems:
- Evaluate, implement, and maintain financial software systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations, and systems implementation to streamline growth and reporting. Vetting new software and data sources to meet organizational needs.
- Coordinate and oversee CDA’s external I.T. support resources.
Team Management
- Supervise and lead the finance team, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
- Providing additional educational resources for others to develop their skills
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in fiscal management and accounting.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, tax regulations, and ASNPO financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency in financial software applications, and Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience in Accounting standards for Not-for-Profit enterprises is required
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with attention to detail.
- Proven track record of accuracy in your work.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to communicate financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $85,000.10-$105,000.60 per year
